  1. An Engaging Story with Great Activities to Reinforce Learning

    5

This was a truly fantastic course designed to improve in all aspects of learning Russian!
    1. Reading – this is the most obvious. The story was engaging, and even though the lessons are broken up into small chunks, it was difficult – near impossible – to stop reading, since I always wanted to know what happens next. The story was funny and provided many interesting cultural references. Parts of the story were challenging, but most of it allowed me to expand my vocabulary, as there was enough repetition of parts of the story to really learn the new targeted vocabulary.
    2. Listening – Each of the chapters had an audio component that read through the entire chapter. I found that listening to this before reading it, then reading, then listening again, then finally listening while looking at the text was very helpful in learning to better listen for words, whether I know them or not. The story was read at a good listening speed for learning.
Each of the lessons also had a ‘Real Life’ component where we watched and had to comment on a small YouTube video. They were short enough to watch multiple times, which was good since they were not intended for learning – they were just real speakers talking at a normal speed.
    3. Writing – In response to the ‘Real Life’ videos we watched, we had to write a response. This was perfect as it helped reinforce the new vocabulary from that chapter, the concepts brought up in the YouTube video, and then integrating those with the language we already know in communicating in paragraph form. Additionally, any communication in the group was also always in Russian 🙂
    4. Grammar – For each week, there are Fun Activities. These activities included identifying cases in some paragraphs, writing words in context by using correct case endings. Many of these things became questions that often sparked discussions in our group, providing great incidental learning and unplanned lessons throughout the weeks.
    5. Speaking – There are individual lessons with Tanya, which flow both conversationally as well as have directed questions about the story, and there are group lessons with Anna and other group members. They are both very encouraging and provide feedback after each lesson on the words/phrases that need to be reviewed.
    6. Repetition – Basically, just look above. The continued repetition of the new vocabulary, phrases, and case usage is spaced and repeated in the text, lessons, activities, and videos.

If you’ve never worked with Anna or any of her courses before, she offers excellent, high quality material, always listens to and responds to feedback by making changes. Many instructors out there are adamant about teaching things the ‘right way’ and are inflexible about course design and methods. Anna is adamant about teaching things in an effective, efficient, and fun way. She has a variety of different courses that each teach in a different manner, so it never seems like ‘more of the same’. This is just another great example of a new type of course that complements the other classes she has to offer!
